Courtenay Griffiths, Defense Counsel in Charles Taylor Trial, Dies

The Hague, Netherlands – June 24, 2025 The Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone (RSCSL) has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Courtenay Griffiths, KC, the renowned British barrister who served as Lead Counsel for former Liberian President Charles Ghankay Taylor during his war crimes trial.

Griffiths, who was appointed in July 2007, led Taylor’s defense through the trial phase until its conclusion in May 2012. On August 31, 2023, he was reappointed as Taylor’s pro bono counsel at the former president’s request.

Griffiths, a veteran of the Bar of England and Wales, was widely recognized for his courtroom prowess and passionate advocacy. RSCSL Principal Defender Ibrahim Yilla described him as “unyielding and eloquent beyond measure in presenting his case before the Special Court.”

Justice Richard Lussick, President of the RSCSL, remembered him as “a fine lawyer,” while Registrar Binta Mansaray paid tribute to his character, calling him “forceful and kind.”

The RSCSL extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Courtenay Griffiths and wished him eternal peace.

The Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone continues the legacy and legal obligations of the original Special Court, which concluded its mandate in 2013. Its responsibilities include the supervision of prison sentences, witness protection, preservation of archives, and cooperation with national legal bodies.
