River Gee, Liberia – A violent land dispute in River Gee County has left three people dead, prompting swift intervention by security forces to restore order and prevent further bloodshed.
The clashes erupted on March 18, 2025, between members of the Glarro and Kiteabo clans in District 3 over a long-standing territorial conflict. Tensions escalated when firearms were introduced into the confrontation, leading to multiple fatalities.
Among the victims was Eric Nyenpan of the Kiteabo clan, who was reportedly killed by individuals from the Glarro clan. In retaliation, Kiteabo fighters allegedly killed Sebastian Saylee, a resident of the Glarro clan. The cycle of violence has left the district in fear, with many residents fleeing for safety.
In response to the escalating crisis, River Gee County Superintendent Mike T. Swengbe led the deployment of joint security forces, including personnel from the Liberia National Police, the Armed Forces of Liberia, the Police Support Unit, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Liberia Immigration Service. The security forces have been stationed in the affected areas to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence.
Civil society organizations have strongly condemned the killings, calling for an immediate and thorough investigation. Abu Diallo, a leader of River Gee County’s civil society organizations, denounced the violence as unlawful and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He also commended Superintendent Swengbe and the joint security forces for their rapid response in containing the crisis.
Superintendent Swengbe has assured residents that the government is committed to restoring peace and ensuring justice. He urged all parties to remain calm while authorities investigate the root causes of the dispute and work toward a peaceful resolution.
As the investigation continues, the local government is engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and prevent further outbreaks of violence. The joint security forces remain on high alert, maintaining a visible presence to deter further hostilities and reassure affected residents of their safety.
