By Abraham Cooper

Abuja, Nigeria – Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), is currently participating in the Regional ECOWAS Disease Control and Surveillance Technical Advisor Committee Meeting, representing Liberia in key discussions on public health.

The high-level meeting brings together health experts and representatives from member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen collaboration in disease prevention and outbreak response across the region.

Dr. Nyan, speaking from Abuja, outlined Liberia’s strong commitment to regional health security, emphasizing several priorities being advanced at the forum:

Strengthening regional cooperation to counter disease threats and safeguard public health.

Tackling challenges in order to improve outbreak preparedness and coordinated responses.

Highlighting plant health as an essential pillar of the One Health framework, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

Advocating for increased research, development, and local manufacturing of diagnostic tools and vaccines within Africa to build greater self-reliance in addressing health crises.

Liberia’s participation underscores the country’s proactive stance in shaping a resilient public health landscape for West Africa, particularly through innovation, sustainable practices, and regional solidarity.

The ECOWAS Technical Advisor Committee plays a crucial role in aligning health strategies among member countries, especially in the face of emerging infectious diseases and other public health emergencies.
