Dr. Urey Appointed to Head Environmental Protection Taskforce

Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appointed Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to lead a newly formed Taskforce focused on safeguarding Liberia’s coastal and wetland areas. The move comes under the provisions of Executive Order No. 143, which aims to combat the growing threat of environmental degradation in the country.

The Taskforce, which will be tasked with addressing concerns over pollution, erosion, and the adverse effects of climate change, is a response to the worsening conditions affecting Liberia’s beachfronts, waterways, and wetlands. These vital ecosystems, which are crucial for the livelihoods of local communities, face increasing pressure from illegal activities, such as the destruction and backfilling of wetlands.

According to a statement from the Executive Mansion on February 24, 2025, President Boakai emphasized the importance of protecting these natural resources for the well-being of the nation. “The unchecked destruction and pollution of wetlands, waterways, and beachfronts pose serious risks to both the environment and the livelihoods of Liberians,” he stated.

Dr. Yarkpawolo, a respected environmental expert, will oversee the Taskforce’s efforts to curb environmental destruction and promote sustainable practices across the country. The Taskforce will collaborate with a range of government agencies, including the Liberia Land Authority, the Ministries of Justice, Internal Affairs, Public Works, Mines and Energy, and Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism. In addition, the Liberia National Police and local authorities will play an integral role in the enforcement of environmental laws and regulations.

Among the key priorities of the Taskforce are halting illegal land reclamation activities, restoring damaged ecosystems, and providing support to local conservation initiatives. It will also focus on raising awareness about the importance of preserving Liberia’s natural heritage and ensuring that those who violate environmental laws are held accountable. A major aspect of the Taskforce’s mandate will be promoting eco-friendly practices, such as discouraging the use of harmful pesticides.

Liberia has been committed to preserving its wetlands since signing the Ramsar Convention in 2003, and Executive Order No. 143 is seen as a significant step toward strengthening the country’s environmental protection efforts. The Taskforce will also work in conjunction with the National Climate Change Steering Committee to ensure that Liberia’s environmental policies are aligned with global standards.

The President has called for immediate action from all stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, and local communities, to support the Taskforce’s work. “Protecting Liberia’s natural heritage is vital for the country’s long-term development and sustainability,” President Boakai stressed. With Dr. Yarkpawolo at the helm, there is growing optimism that Liberia’s critical coastal and wetland areas will be better protected for generations to come.
