Monrovia, Liberia – The Office of the Resident Representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Liberia has strongly condemned the violent clashes between protesters and police at the Capitol Building on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. In a press statement titled “ECOWAS Calls for Restraint” issued on Wednesday, December 18, ECOWAS expressed deep concern over the escalating tension in Monrovia and called for calm on all sides.
“ECOWAS notes with growing concern the escalation of tension in Monrovia and widely condemns the violent clashes between police and protestors,” the statement read. The regional body urged both protesters and the Liberia National Police to exercise restraint in pursuing their respective rights and mandates to avoid further violence.
The statement also addressed the fire that reportedly broke out at the Capitol Building on the morning of December 18, urging Liberia’s security agencies to investigate the incident promptly and share the findings with the public.
ECOWAS emphasized the importance of transparency in maintaining public trust.
Reiterating its commitment to democratic principles, ECOWAS called on all parties to respect the rule of law and adhere to the tenets of democracy as enshrined in Liberia’s Constitution.
“ECOWAS urges the genuine reconciliation of differences for sustained peace and stability in Liberia and the subregion,” the statement concluded.
The statement reflects growing international concern over Liberia’s political climate as the country struggles with escalating tensions. ECOWAS’s call for restraint and dialogue highlights the urgency of resolving disputes through peaceful means to preserve Liberia’s democratic progress and regional stability.
As investigations into the causes of the violence and the Capitol fire continue, ECOWAS’s appeal for calm and adherence to democratic norms serves as a reminder of the critical role all stakeholders must play in safeguarding Liberia’s peace and security.
