Monrovia, Liberia – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved US$725,000 through its Humanitarian Department for a new program aimed at boosting resilience and assisting communities affected by disasters in Liberia.
The Liberia National Red Cross Society has announced it will work alongside the National Disaster Management Agency to implement the project.
The project will allow the Liberia National Red Cross Society to provide US$455,000 in mobile money cash transfers to 1,820 families impacted by disasters in 2024.
Additionally, it will include the construction of 25 new hand pumps and the repair of 36 existing damaged pumps to improve access to clean water to it affected communities in Liberia.
According to the Liberia National Red Cross Society, “We will also train 200 local farmers in climate-smart agriculture and provide them with seeds and tools.”
The project will place a strong emphasis on waste management and enhancing community resilience as essential elements of its activities.
The support underscores ECOWAS’ dediction to strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities, as highlighted by ECOWAS Resident Representative Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah during a recent Project Steering Committee meeting in Monrovia.
