A High-Level Delegation led by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray, has iterated that their official visit to Liberia has nothing to do with former President George Weah’s communication to the ECOWAS dated 23 August 2024.
The ECOWAS Delegation said its one-day working visit to Liberia was intended to reassure the new Government of President Joseph Boakai of their support and to also applaud former President Weah for a peaceful political transition.
The Commission said that even though it had been informed about the violent standoff between State security and the Opposition CDC at the CDC Headquarters, its mission to Liberia was never in response to that situation or as a result of ex-President Weah’s complaint.
ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, reechoed that their visit was planned far in advance and they were specifically in Liberia to applaud the national leadership of the country for what he termed as a ‘smooth political transition’ and to recommit their support to the new administration. Before ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, could meet with President Boakai today, he along with his delegation had met earlier with former President George Weah.
For his part, President Boakai assured the ECOWAS Commission’s delegation of his government’s fullest commitment to maintaining peace and promoting genuine national reconciliation. He reechoed that his administration has no intent to target anyone. The government through the Minister of Justice reemphasized during the meeting that at no time did State Security “attack” the CDC Headquarters as the opposition party has claimed.
