Tensions are escalating within the Unity Party (UP) alliance, nine (9) months into President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration, as dissatisfaction grows among political allies over governance issues.
The Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), a key supporter of the UP, has expressed particular frustration over what it describes as one-sided appointments and the government’s failure to address urgent economic challenges.
In a recent statement on social media, EFFL leader Emmanuel Gonquoi criticized “economic opportunists” within the government for pushing the nation toward a crisis.
He emphasized that his discussions with President Boakai have always prioritized the needs of Liberians, especially the youth who supported the party throughout its political journey.
Gonquoi noted the EFFL’s efforts in mediating labor-related protests, yet lamented a growing sentiment among some officials to disregard the party’s concerns.
He emphasized the EFFL’s commitment to the welfare of the people, declaring, “We are awaiting your signal, Mr. President! We struggle not for ourselves but rather, for our people.”
Reflecting on his prior role as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Labor, Gonquoi explained his decision to step aside in favor of the party chairman, stating it was crucial to uphold loyalty to supporters.
Despite being appointed to the Assets Recovery Code Team, he resigned due to internal contradictions that hindered progress.
Gonquoi reiterated the EFFL’s mission to advocate for the marginalized, asserting that the fight is about securing a just future rather than personal gain.
He cautioned against disrespect from government officials, reminding them of the EFFL’s integral role within the UP alliance and its commitment to their constituents.
In conclusion, Gonquoi urged a return to dialogue and cooperation, stressing the importance of addressing the material conditions of the Liberian people without compromising the party’s core values.
