Monoriva, February 19, 2026-Employees of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Thursday, February 19, 2026, surprised their Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, in recognition of what they described as two years of strong and transformational leadership at the institution.
Dr. Yarkpawolo began his day as usual, arriving at the office as early as 7:00 AM. After attending to some official duties, he left for a scheduled radio interview at 9:00 AM. Unaware of what was being planned behind the scenes, he continued with his normal activities, even preparing to attend another event shortly after the interview.
However, while en route, he received a message asking him to return to the EPA, with information that some international guests were waiting to meet him. Without hesitation, he instructed his driver to turn around and head back to the office.
Upon his arrival at the EPA headquarters, he was met with a completely different scene. Jubilant employees had gathered, singing and dancing in celebration. Surprised by the moment, Dr. Yarkpawolo reportedly asked his driver what was happening, but neither the driver nor his security detail had any idea of the planned event.
As he stepped out of the vehicle, employees rushed toward him in excitement, expressing appreciation for his leadership and the progress made at the agency since he assumed office.
A short program was quickly held in his honor, during which employees praised Dr. Yarkpawolo for what they described as major improvements at the EPA. Speaking on behalf of the workforce, employees highlighted several key changes, including the acquisition of a new home for the agency, the provision of vehicles to support operations, salary increments for workers, and the promotion of unity, teamwork, and mutual respect among employees.
They added that under his leadership, the EPA has become more active and visible across the country, with stronger enforcement of environmental laws and better engagement with both local and international partners.
The employees further noted that Dr. Yarkpawolo’s leadership style has created a sense of belonging within the institution, where employees feel valued, motivated, and committed to their work. They described him as a leader who listens, encourages growth, and leads by example.
“We are proud of the changes we are seeing. The EPA today is not the same as before. We now have direction, we have hope, and we have a leader who believes in his team,” the employees’ statement emphasized.
The employees called on Dr. Yarkpawolo to remain focused and continue on the same path, assuring him of their full support and commitment to advancing the work of the agency.
As a sign of appreciation, the employees presented him with a ceremonial gown, symbolizing their respect and gratitude for his leadership.
In an emotional response, Dr. Yarkpawolo, visibly touched and in tears of joy, thanked the employees for the unexpected honor. He described the moment as a blessing and said the recognition was not for him alone.
“This is the working of God,” he said.
According to him, the achievements recorded over the past two years are the result of collective efforts by the entire EPA team, including senior management and employees across the country.
“I may be the vision bearer, but the real work is being done by all of you,” he told the gathering. “You are the ones making the EPA what it is today.”
He encouraged employees to remain united and continue working together for the betterment of the agency and the country.
“Let’s continue on this path. Let us stay together and build a stronger EPA,” he urged.
He called on both the senior management team and the employees to sustain the progress made and continue strengthening environmental protection efforts in Liberia.
