EPA Launches Probe into Environmental Spill at ArcelorMittal Mining Site in Nimba County

Monrovia, Liberia ~ The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia has launched a formal investigation into an environmental incident at ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Yuelliton mining site in Nimba County, following a reported spill of iron-rich sediments into nearby water systems.

According to the EPA, the mining company notified the agency on October 4, 2025, of an accident that led to the exposure of iron-laden sediments on the southwestern edge of the Yuelliton basecamp and along the western slope of the site. Heavy rainfall following the incident caused the sediments to wash into nearby rivers, affecting farmlands and contaminating water sources, particularly around Bonla Village.

In response, the EPA immediately dispatched a team of environmental technicians to assess the impact of the spill. The agency says it is currently conducting soil, water, and sediment sampling in the affected areas to determine the level of contamination, assess potential health risks, and evaluate the broader ecological impact.

“The EPA is committed to ensuring environmental safety and public health. We are currently analyzing field data, and appropriate regulatory measures will follow upon completion of our investigation,” the agency said in a statement.

As part of its ongoing response, the EPA is coordinating with local authorities, community leaders, and ArcelorMittal Liberia to ensure transparency and effective mitigation.

The agency has urged members of the public with information or environmental concerns related to the incident to contact its Media and Corporate Communications office via email at info@epa.gov.lr.
