EU Commits Over US$8 Million to Upgrade Roberts International Airport, LAA Announces

The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has announced that it has secured more than US$8 million in new financial support from the European Union aimed at significantly improving aviation safety, security, and infrastructure across Liberia, with major upgrades planned for Roberts International Airport (RIA).

According to the LAA, the EU-funded initiative will focus on modernizing critical airport systems and facilities to meet international standards. The project includes the installation of modern runway and taxiway lighting systems, upgrades to air traffic control equipment, and the procurement of new firefighting and emergency response vehicles.

These improvements are expected to enhance operational safety, particularly during night operations and adverse weather conditions.

In addition to safety upgrades, the investment will strengthen airport security and passenger services. Planned improvements include enhanced passenger and baggage screening systems, as well as critical repairs to airport infrastructure such as aprons, taxiways, and perimeter fencing.

The LAA said these interventions will help ensure safer, more efficient, and more reliable airport operations for travelers and airlines alike.

“These upgrades bring us closer to the safe, reliable, and world-class airport facilities the Liberian people deserve,” the Liberia Airport Authority said in an official statement, emphasizing its commitment to improving aviation services nationwide.

Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sarah Beysolow Nyanti, who played a key role in securing the funding, highlighted the broader national importance of the investment. She noted that the condition and performance of Liberia’s airports shape international perceptions of the country.

According to the Minister, the EU’s support will help project a positive image of Liberia while strengthening the nation’s links with the global community.

The partnership with the European Union is also expected to have far-reaching economic benefits. Improved airport infrastructure and safety standards are seen as vital to boosting regional and international connectivity, supporting tourism, facilitating trade, and encouraging foreign investment.

Officials described the funding as a strong step forward for Liberia’s aviation sector and overall development, reaffirming the government’s commitment to modernizing key national infrastructure in collaboration with international partners.
