The European Union (EU), in collaboration with the Government of Liberia, has committed EUR 130,000 (USD 141,028.55) to assist flood victims across Montserrado, Bong, and Grand Cape Mount counties.
This funding is aimed at alleviating the suffering of vulnerable communities severely affected by ongoing extreme rainfall that is expected to persist until November 2024.
The financial support will be channeled through the Liberia National Red Cross, which will focus on providing emergency shelters and essential services to those most in need, including women, children, and individuals with physical disabilities.
It targets counties including Montserrado, Bong, and Grand Cape Mount.
This initiative underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting Liberia during this critical period, as the country grapples with the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
A spokesperson from the European Union mission near Monrovia outlined the scope of the aid, which includes multi-purpose cash grants.
These grants are designed to cover a wide range of needs, including non-food items, as well as support for livelihood restoration, water access, hygiene, and sanitation.
The coordinated humanitarian response is expected to last for four months, providing much-needed relief until the end of November 2024.
The partnership between the EU and the Liberian government reflects a shared commitment to addressing the immediate needs of those impacted by the floods, while also laying the groundwork for longer-term recovery and resilience.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by both parties to manage the ongoing crisis, ensuring that those affected receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.
As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, such collaborative efforts are essential to mitigate their impact and safeguard vulnerable populations.
The EU’s contribution is a vital step in this direction, demonstrating international solidarity with Liberia as the country faces the challenges of climate change and its consequences.
