Ex-DEA Deputy Director Says Business Tycoons, Not Politicians, Drive Drug Trade in Liberia

Monrovia, August 22, 2025 – Former Deputy Director of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Hassan Fadiga, has alleged that many of the country’s drug importers are not government officials but rather wealthy business figures and philanthropists.

Speaking Thursday on The Closing Arguments talks show, Fadiga stressed that the drug trade in Liberia is being fueled by powerful individuals with deep financial influence.

Most of the importers of drugs in this country aren’t senior government officials. They’re top business people and philanthropists,” he said.

Fadiga also criticized the government for underfunding the LDEA, arguing that poorly paid agents cannot be expected to confront drug cartels effectively.

“You can’t be paying DEA agents $100 and expect them to fight drugs. That’s a joke,” he stated.

His comments come amid growing public concern about Liberia’s drug crisis, which has triggered waves of protests and crackdowns in several communities across Montserrado County.
