FAL, MOH, and MOCI Recall Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Over Safety Concerns

The Food Authority of Liberia (FAL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI), has launched a nationwide recall of Tasty Tom Tomato Mix due to safety concerns.

At a press briefing in Monrovia on Thursday, FAL Director General Madam Precellia Cherue provided an update on the recall, which was first announced on October 14, 2025.

Laboratory tests confirmed that several batches of the tomato mix contained unsafe levels of salt and benzoic acid.

Additionally, undeclared additives and mold contamination were detected, making the product unfit for consumption.

Madam Cherue revealed that investigations traced the affected batches back to a single importer.

A total of 190,000 packs were imported into Liberia, with 150,000 already recalled and securely isolated.

Ongoing inspections by FAL and MOCI teams are being conducted nationwide to ensure complete removal of the product from stores, warehouses, and distribution centers.

The recalled tomato mix will be disposed of through a supervised incineration process to safeguard both public health and the environment.

The importer responsible has been instructed to cover all expenses related to the recall, disposal, and associated public awareness campaigns.

In response to this incident, FAL is reinforcing stricter preventive measures to avoid similar occurrences in the future.

All importers, manufacturers, and distributors are now required to register their products and business premises with FAL before placing any goods on the Liberian market.

Furthermore, every food product, whether imported or locally produced-must undergo safety testing to ensure compliance with national standards before being approved for sale.

Madam Cherue emphasized that these measures are vital to protecting consumers and restoring public confidence in food safety.

The recall demonstrates FAL’s commitment to working closely with national partners to safeguard public health.
