Liberia’s Finance Minister, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, has issued a stern warning to former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, urging him to immediately desist from what Ngafuan describes as a ‘smear campaign’ involving false corruption allegations, particularly concerning the use of remaining COVID-19 funds.
Speaking Wednesday, July 16, 2025, on the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), Minister Ngafuan specifically addressed allegations that he wrote to the World Food Programme (WFP) to access remaining COVID-19 funds for personal use.
While acknowledging that Tweah may be facing personal challenges, Minister Ngafuan emphatically stated that this does not justify the propagation of baseless accusations against him.
Minister Ngafuan, among other things utilized the platform to clarify the true nature of his actions.
He told journalists that his directive to the WFP was not for personal gain but rather to facilitate the transfer of a portion of the funds into the government’s consolidated account.
This transfer, he explained, was specifically earmarked to support the vital national school feeding program, directly contradicting the “false allegations” made against him.
The public warning issued by Minister Ngafuan highlights a growing tension between current and former high-ranking officials within Liberia’s financial administration, underscoring the urgency to scrutinize the management and accountability of public funds, particularly those allocated for critical national programs and projects.
