Bettu Town, Sasstown District – A 47-year-old fisherman, identified as Kunwon Sieh, has reportedly drowned in the sea in Bettu Town, Sasstown District, Grand Kru County.
According to the District Commander of Sasstown, Patrol Officer Prince Yancey, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
Patrol Officer Yancey disclosed that he responded to the scene at approximately 10:00 p.m. (2200hrs) after receiving information about the drowning. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of Mr. Sieh lying along the seashore in Bettu Town. He was dressed in a black T-shirt and black jeans trousers.
Preliminary investigations established that Mr. Sieh, a Kru Liberian and resident of Bettu Town, had reportedly gone to sea alone to fish when the incident occurred.
Information gathered from fellow fishermen indicated that the fishing area contains several rocks beneath the water’s surface.
Authorities believe the victim’s canoe may have struck one of the rocks, leading to the fatal incident. Sources further disclosed that the deceased was not a strong swimmer.
A fifteen-member coroner jury was subsequently constituted to determine whether there was any foul play or suspicious circumstance surrounding the death.
Following its assessment, the jury concluded that there was no evidence of foul play and ruled that Mr. Sieh died as a result of drowning.
The body of Kunwon Sieh has since been turned over to his brother, Thomas Sieh, for burial.
Police say the case has been officially closed, with drowning established as the cause of death.
