“Fix the Shame of Monrovia” — Sirleaf Demands Action on Dilapidated Government Buildings

By: Archie Boan

Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called for urgent legislative action to address the growing number of dilapidated government buildings across Monrovia, warning that the decaying structures are bringing embarrassment to the nation and damaging Liberia’s image before international partners and visitors.

Speaking before the 55th House of Representatives of Liberia, Sirleaf expressed deep concern over the continued deterioration of several historic and government facilities located in the capital city.

She told lawmakers that many of these buildings, once symbols of national pride, now stand as visible reminders of neglect and inaction.

“The Central Bank of Liberia, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the structure of the E. J. Roye Building, the Centennial Pavilion, the Executive Pavilions, and the historic Executive Mansion,” Sirleaf noted, listing some of the major structures she believes require immediate attention. According to her, these landmarks form part of the country’s identity and should not be left to decay.

Sirleaf emphasized that international partners, investors, and visitors frequently travel through the city and are confronted by the deteriorating state of these buildings. “Our partners and our visitors drive the roads of our city in wonder, but nothing can be done about this,” she said, stressing that the situation reflects poorly on the country’s governance and national pride.

The former president urged lawmakers to provide the necessary legislative backing that would enable the executive branch to take decisive action. She stressed that without clear legislative authority and commitment, the government may struggle to mobilize the resources and policies required to rehabilitate or redevelop the affected structures.
