Former Bomi County Senator Sando Johnson Declares He Will Not Support Unity Party in 2029 Elections

Monrovia, Liberia ~ Former Bomi County Senator Sando Johnson has publicly announced that he will not support the Unity Party (UP) in the 2029 general and presidential elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Spoon Talk, Senator Johnson emphatically stated that his support for the current administration ends with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

“I have said I will not support the Unity Party in 2029,” Johnson declared. “Let me repeat — I will not. I will not support the Unity Party in 2029. Those that have ears have heard it. I’m sure the President has heard it. I’m sure his Vice President has heard it. I tell you, only for President Boakai — and I will not go beyond that.”

The former lawmaker said his political alignment is limited strictly to the current president, emphasizing that once President Boakai’s tenure ends, his support for the ruling party will end as well.

When asked whether he would support another political movement in 2029, Johnson said he remains open to backing another candidate if discussions lead to an agreement. “If I conclude with them and decide to support them, I will,” he said.

The senator’s declaration has sparked reactions among political commentators and supporters online. On the same Spoon Talk program, panelists discussed Johnson’s political history, with some accusing him of frequently shifting allegiances.

One commentator remarked that while Johnson has the right to associate or disassociate with any political party, questions about “integrity and consistency” naturally arise.

“At a certain point, you were loyal to George Weah when money was flowing. Then you joined the CPP, went silent, later supported the UP — and now you’re distancing yourself again,” one analyst said.

The speaker added that political loyalty in Liberia often appears transactional, saying, “When you choose to destroy people’s character for no reason, those associated with you have to come and debunk your statements. It’s nothing personal, but integrity matters.”

Responding to critics, former Senator Johnson said his decisions are guided by his personal convictions and the interests of his constituents in Bomi County. “I have to feed my people,” he said. “If they don’t protect my interests and the interests of Bomi, I have the right to decide where to stand.”

He insisted that his political moves are not based on financial or personal gain but on ensuring that his county benefits from national development projects.

Sando Johnson is a long-time figure in Liberian politics, having served as senator for Bomi County and once aligned with former President George M. Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC). He later joined the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) before moving to support President Boakai and the Unity Party during the 2023 elections.

His latest statement signals another potential political realignment as Liberia begins to look ahead to the 2029 elections.
