In collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Liberian government is gearing up to rehabilitate a 237-kilometer coastal road connecting Buchanan, Cestos, and Greenville. This transformative project aims to improve infrastructure and boost regional development along the vital coastal route.
Preparatory activities are underway, including Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) studies. These evaluations, essential for project commencement, will focus on the Buchanan to Cestos Bridge section (74 kilometers) and the Cestos Junction to Cestos City stretch (31 kilometers).
The Ministry of Public Works has invited property owners within the designated Right-of-Way to participate in the RAP preparation exercise from January 7 to January 16, 2025. This process conducted daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, will involve property identification, socio-economic assessments, and valuations. These steps are critical for determining fair compensation and assisting those affected by the project.
The assessment will encompass areas extending 75 feet from the road’s centerline in rural regions and 50 feet in urban zones. To ensure transparency and address any concerns, a Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) will be established during the exercise.
Once completed, the coastal road rehabilitation is expected to improve road safety, enhance transportation, and create economic opportunities for communities along the corridor, marking a significant step toward regional development in Liberia.
