Gold Grumble -Communities Clash over Gold Mine

By Patrick Teah, Jr.

A growing dispute over a gold-rich mining area in Grand Kru County is heightening tensions between communities in Bolloh and Jlao Districts, raising fears of potential violence.

Residents of Sasstown in Jlao District and those of Bolloh Poe in Bolloh District are both laying claim to the same mining site, believed to contain valuable gold deposits. The competing claims have reportedly intensified in recent days, with each side asserting historical ownership of the land.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that some residents of Sasstown who had been living in Bolloh Poe have begun relocating, citing safety concerns amid fears of possible confrontation.

Local residents have warned that the situation reflects a broader pattern of resource-based disputes in rural Liberia, where unclear land boundaries and the economic value of artisanal mining often trigger community-level conflicts.

Authorities have yet to publicly intervene, but citizens and civil society actors are calling for urgent mediation to clarify land ownership and establish mechanisms for peaceful resource-sharing.
