Gold, Guns, and Growing Tension-Mining Dispute Sparks Armed Confrontation in Grand Kru

By Patrick Teah

A simmering dispute over a gold-rich mining area in Upper Sasstown is raising fears of a looming conflict in Grand Kru County, as reports of armed men and gunfire have heightened tensions among local communities.

Residents say the situation escalated on Sunday, March 8, 2026, when a group of armed men believed to be from Bolloh Kaykpo and Poe Town reportedly crossed into a contested mining site on the Sasstown side of the boundary. The area, believed to contain significant gold deposits, has recently become the center of an intensifying struggle over control of mining activities.

Eyewitnesses said the group entered the area in what residents described as an attempt to assert control over the mining territory. The reported intrusion triggered panic among villagers, forcing several residents to flee into nearby bushes as gunshots were allegedly fired during the confrontation.

No casualties have been officially confirmed, but there are unverified reports suggesting that some individuals may have been forcibly taken during the clashes, further fueling fears of escalating violence.

The dispute has also drawn allegations against Grand Kru County Land Administrator David Togba, with some community members accusing him of having links to the situation. Others claim that influential gold miners from Bolloh may be supporting the group involved in the confrontation. These allegations, however, remain unverified and have not been confirmed by authorities.

Observers say the growing tension appears to be rooted in competition for access to the gold-bearing land, which local miners say has become increasingly valuable due to ongoing mining activities in the area.

In an effort to calm the situation, Grand Kru County Administrative Officer Alphonso D. N. Teah reportedly visited the affected communities to engage local leaders and encourage dialogue aimed at preventing further violence. County authorities are also said to be awaiting intervention from the national government and security agencies to help stabilize the area.

Historically, Bolloh and Jlao Statutory Districts have maintained close cultural and social ties, often regarded as sister communities. However, residents fear that the intensifying dispute over the lucrative mining territory could strain that long-standing relationship if swift action is not taken.

Many citizens have expressed concern that the situation could spiral into a broader conflict if the government fails to quickly address the dispute and regulate mining activities in the contested zone.

As of press time, local authorities had not released an official statement, and the security situation in the area remained tense.
