Government Calls on Lawmakers to Put Country First Amid Legislative Crisis

The Liberian government has urged members of the House of Representatives to prioritize national interests over political infighting following a Supreme Court ruling aimed at resolving the leadership dispute within the legislature.

At a press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information, Information Minister Jerolimek Matthew Piah, speaking for the government, emphasized the Boakai administration’s concern that the ongoing impasse in the House is diverting attention from national development efforts and eroding public confidence in democratic institutions.“

This internal conflict risks derailing the progress we’ve made in governance and development,” Piah cautioned. He reiterated the government’s respect for the separation of powers and called on lawmakers to use the Court’s decision as a stepping stone toward a peaceful resolution. Piah also noted the government’s outreach to groups like the Traditional Council in seeking a unified path forward.

Calling on legislators to set aside personal and political agendas, Piah stressed the importance of returning to legislative work for the sake of Liberia’s future.“

Our path to national recovery requires unity and selfless service,” he said. The government also commended lawmakers who have already resumed their duties and expressed hope that the House will soon fully reunite to advance the ARREST Agenda for inclusive development.
