Government Releases New Petroleum Price, Urges Dealers and Retailers to Adhere Caps in Rural Liberia

By: Ben TC Brooks

Monrovia, Liberia | March 21, 2026 | The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company – LPRC, has announced a new set of approved ceiling prices for petroleum products across Liberia, targeting rural counties in a bid to ensure affordability and market stability.

The revised pricing structure takes immediate effect as of March 20, 2026 and forms part of the government’s broader strategy to regulate fuel and gas costs, particularly outside major urban centers where prices are often higher.

According to the Ministry, and Refining Agency, the new price ceilings reflect prevailing global oil market trends, transportation expenses, and supply chain challenges that impact fuel delivery to remote areas.

The release says the adjustment is designed to strike a balance between protecting consumers and maintaining fair profit margins for importers and distributors.

The policy also aims to promote nationwide price uniformity and transparency.

The release also said by setting maximum allowable prices, the government intends to curb arbitrary increases and prevent exploitation in rural markets, where limited competition has historically driven up costs.

Authorities have issued a strong warning to petroleum dealers and retailers operating in rural counties to strictly adhere to the new guidelines.

The Ministry emphasized that any violations will attract penalties, including fines, suspension of operating licenses, and other regulatory sanctions.

Consumers, on the other hand, are being encouraged to report cases of overpricing or non-compliance to the relevant authorities, as part of efforts to ensure full enforcement of the policy.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring implementation and ensuring the new pricing system delivers tangible benefits to the public.

The latest move underscores the government’s continued efforts to stabilize the petroleum sector and reduce the economic burden on citizens, particularly those in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.
