Government Reverts Agreement on Rice Price Increment

In a significant announcement, the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, acting on behalf of the Liberian government, has declared the suspension of the planned increase in the price of rice, a staple commodity in the country.

This decision comes in response to recent pronouncements by the Ministry of Commerce regarding a potential rise in rice prices, stirring concerns among citizens.

The Government of Liberia (GOL), through the Minister of Commerce and Industry Amin Modad, Monday, May 20, 2024 announced that it has agreed to a request from importers to increase the price of a specific brand of rice on the local market, describing the rice industry as a “cartel.”

Addressing the public on behalf of the Liberian Government, Deputy Minister for Technical Services at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, Daniel Sando assured citizens that the announced increment by the Commerce Minister Amin Modad would not take immediate effect, urging the populace not to panic.

During the Ministry of Information’s regular weekly press briefing, Deputy Minister Sando emphasized President Joseph Boakai’s intervention, instructing importers and the Commerce Ministry to halt the price increment pending further dialogue. Sando reiterated President Boakai’s commitment to ensuring that Liberians can afford essential commodities, particularly rice, without undue financial strain.

Highlighting the government’s concern for the welfare of its citizens, Minister Sando referenced the historic 1979 rice riot, underscoring the enduring significance of rice affordability in Liberian society. “The president has taken hold of the situation and is actively addressing it in the best interests of the Liberian people,” stated Deputy Minister Sando.

Assuring the public of stability in rice prices, Minister Sando added that negotiations are underway to address challenges posed by importers and business partners. He confirmed that under the president’s intervention, the price of a 25kg bag of Indian 5% broken grain rice would remain constant at $18.50.

Moreover, Minister Sando emphasized President Boakai’s unwavering dedication to improving the standard of living for all Liberians during his tenure, stating “The government is diligently working to ensure access to affordable and quality food for its citizens”.

In a cautionary note, the deputy minister urged opposition groups to refrain from spreading misinformation, dismissing such actions as politically motivated. He denounced false claims suggesting government collusion with importers to exploit the populace financially, urging unity and cooperation in addressing national challenges.

The Ministry of Information’s announcement signifies a proactive approach by the Liberian government in safeguarding the economic interests and well-being of its citizens, particularly concerning essential commodities like rice.

As negotiations progress, Liberians expect to see that the government is committed to fostering transparency and stability in the country’s food supply chain.
