Gov’t Launches “One Child, One Chair” Initiative to Improve School Learning Conditions

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Civil Service Agency (CSA), has launched the “One Child, One Chair” initiative, a program aimed at improving learning conditions in public schools across Liberia.

The event featured the presentation of the first 525 locally manufactured school chairs to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

Speaking at the launch, CSA Director-General Dr. Josiah F. Joekai, Jr. explained that the production of the chairs was financed through revenues generated from enforcing the national assets declaration mandate.

He highlighted that the initiative was implemented in partnership with the Monrovia Vocational Training Center, providing hands-on training and employment opportunities for Liberians.

“The production of these chairs not only supports education but also creates skills development and decent work opportunities for our citizens,” Dr. Joekai said.

Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah emphasized that the distribution of the chairs will be accompanied by transparent tracking and maintenance systems to ensure they reach schools fairly and remain in use for years to come.

President Boakai commended the initiative, underscoring the government’s commitment to creating safe, comfortable, and conducive learning environments for students.

He noted that providing adequate school furniture is a key step in reducing preventable barriers to education and improving student performance.

The “One Child, One Chair” program represents the first tangible step toward a broader goal of ensuring that every Liberian child can learn in dignity, comfort, and safety.

The initiative also highlights the government’s efforts to link educational improvements with local production and workforce development.

They indicated that more chairs will be produced and distributed in the coming months, aiming to reach schools nationwide and provide every student with a proper place to learn.
