Grand Gedeh Students Declare “Grant Must Leave” Protest, Demand President Boakai Sack Superintendent Alex Grant

By: Archie Boan

The Grand Gedeh University Students Union (GGUSU) has announced plans for a mass peaceful protest in Monrovia on Monday, November 3, 2025, demanding the immediate removal of Grand Gedeh County Superintendent Alex Chersia Grant.

In a strongly worded press release issued Friday, the student body said the protest under the banner “Grant Must Leave” is aimed at petitioning President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to dismiss Superintendent Grant for what they describe as poor governance, abuse of power, and betrayal of public trust.

According to GGUSU, Superintendent Grant has “proven to be an egocentric, divisive, and self-serving leader whose selfish interest has undermined the future of Grand Gedeh County.”

The Union accused him of refusing to release the county’s 2024 US$30,000 budgetary allotment intended to support students, despite all required procedures being fulfilled. The group claims the action has crippled student operations, forced many underprivileged learners to drop out of school, and demonstrated Grant’s disregard for youth development.

“From the peak of the Legislature to becoming head of Grand Gedeh’s local authority, Grant has subjugated and oppressed all sectors of the county, turning public offices into personal fiefdoms,” the release stated.

Among the grievances cited, GGUSU described as “an insult to the legacy of our forefathers” the leasing of 500 acres of ancestral land to a Burkinabe national for 30 years at US$600,000, allegedly without local consent a move they say violates the Land Rights Act of 2018.

“We have tolerated enough deceit and arrogance under Superintendent Grant’s watch,” the Union declared. “His refusal to release the students’ funds and his reckless mismanagement of county resources are attacks on our future. We will not stand idle while our dignity is traded for personal interest.”

The student body, however, emphasized that its planned protest will be peaceful, disciplined, and people-driven, reflecting what it called “a collective demand for justice, accountability, and respect for student rights.”

GGUSU’s demands the Immediate removal of Superintendent Alex Chersia Grant, Release of the 2024 budgetary allotment owed to GGUSU and other local groups, National investigation into the alleged illegal leasing of Grand Gedeh ancestral land, appointment of a transparent,

people-centered leader who respects youth voices and community dignity.

In its conclusion, the Union called on students, youth, traditional leaders, and all sons and daughters of Grand Gedeh County to unite for the cause, insisting that the movement is not political but “a principled fight for justice and the future of a people.”

“We will not bow to intimidation or surrender to manipulation,” GGUSU vowed.
