Grand Kru Residents Urge Speaker Koffa Not to Resign

Monrovia – Amid mounting speculation about his possible resignation, citizens of Grand Kru County, particularly in Electoral District #2, are urging embattled House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa to remain in his legislative seat. Reports suggest Koffa is considering stepping down in protest of what he believes to be an illegal process that led to his removal from the speakership. Sources indicate he is unwilling to serve under Representative Richard Nagbe Koon, whom he and his supporters claim assumed the role unconstitutionally.

Although Koffa has yet to publicly confirm his intentions, residents of Grand Kru County have strongly opposed the idea of his resignation, warning that his departure would be a major setback for the district’s development. Citizens across towns and villages have highlighted Koffa’s contributions to infrastructure, social justice, and economic growth since his election in 2017. They credit his leadership for driving modernization efforts in the county’s 12 traditional communities.

Speaking in mobile phone interviews, several residents voiced their concerns. “We were devastated when we heard that our representative might resign. This would bring shame and embarrassment to those of us who voted for him in 2023,” said a group of concerned citizens. Sunday E. Toogbabu Sr., General Coordinator for the Friends of Hon. Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, pleaded with him to remain in office, emphasizing that his leadership is crucial to the district’s future. Other residents, including Patricia Bartu of Sasstown Down Beach, Hawa Toogbabu of Weakeken in Barclayville City, and Wesley Nagbe of Noakia in Sasstown, expressed fears that Koffa’s resignation would create a leadership void that may be difficult to fill. “We voted for him to represent us at the National Legislature, and if he resigns, our district will struggle to find someone with his level of commitment and vision,” they stated.

Public concern intensified following the dramatic invasion of Koffa’s office on February 11, 2025, allegedly led by Bong County District #2 Representative James Kolleh, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules, Order, and Administration. Residents described the incident as a political maneuver aimed at undermining Koffa’s legitimacy.

In response to these developments, citizens of District #2 are reportedly mobilizing a delegation to travel to Monrovia to express their support.
