Foya District, Lofa County — Residents of communities along the Liberia–Guinea border in Foya District, Lofa County, are reporting heightened tension after an alleged invasion by armed Guinean soldiers early Tuesday morning.
According to locals and eyewitness accounts, the soldiers crossed the Makona River and reportedly planted a Guinean flag at the Sorlumba Port of Entry on the Liberian side in Sorlumba Town, a key crossing point between Liberia and Guinea.
Locals confirmed to Verity News that the armed soldiers were also seen laying wooden planks along the waterside, a move residents believe may be a preparation for the construction of temporary structures in the “invaded” border area. “They are claiming 1,000km of Liberia’s land,” a local resident said.
The reported development has sparked fear and uncertainty among residents, particularly because, according to locals, no Liberian security personnel were present at the scene at the time of the incident even though a previous alarm was raised by Verity News.
Security authorities in Liberia have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Residents are calling on the government and security agencies to urgently intervene to ensure the protection of Liberian communities and territories along the border.
