Guinean Troops Enter Liberia Despite MRU Peace Agreement

By Morlu Freeman

A reporter with Verity News stationed at the Liberia–Guinea border has captured images showing armed Guinean soldiers on Liberian soil, raising fresh concerns over rising tensions between the two countries.

According to reports, the soldiers from Guinea crossed into Liberia early Tuesday through the Makona River and were seen within communities near Foya.

The development comes less than 24 hours after leaders of the Mano River Union (MRU) concluded an emergency meeting in Conakry aimed at easing territorial tensions and reaffirming commitments to peace and mutual respect for sovereignty.

At that meeting, MRU leaders agreed to promote stability and prevent cross-border conflicts. However, the reported movement of Guinean troops into Liberian territory has raised questions about adherence to those commitments.

Liberian authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the situation, but residents in affected areas are said to be alarmed as the situation continues to unfold.
