HARPER, Maryland County — A tanker reportedly belonging to the Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL), a palm oil-producing company operating in Grand Kru County, was involved in an accident in Harper while transporting oil to the Port of Harper.
The incident marks the second accident involving GVL tankers transporting oil to the port within a period of six months, raising serious safety concerns among residents along the Harper–Pleebo Highway.
Residents of several towns along the route expressed fear over the recurring accidents, describing the situation as dangerous for their communities. Speaking to journalists, some residents called on the management of GVL to ensure that only roadworthy and well-maintained trucks are used for transporting oil.
According to community members, the highway is frequently used by students traveling between Pleebo and surrounding towns, including those attending Tubman University.James Hower a resident of Philadelphia community noted that the presence of heavy-duty tankers on the road poses a constant threat to pedestrians and commuters.
“This road is always busy with students and local travelers. It is only by God’s grace that no lives have been lost in these repeated accidents,” one resident said.
Police officers who visited the scene confirmed that the tanker overturned during the accident. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
Authorities have, however, launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the accident and why GVL tankers have been repeatedly involved in such incidents along the highway.
Officials emphasized the importance of addressing the issue to prevent future accidents that could result in loss of lives and destruction of property.
Residents and local leaders are now urging both the company and relevant authorities to take immediate action to improve road safety and protect communities along the route.
