Following the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on April 23, 2025, that affirmed Jonathan Fonati Koffa as the legitimate Speaker of the Liberian House of Representatives, Representative Bernard Blue Benson ( DJ Blue) of District 17, Mountserrado, has reiterated his commitment to uphold the Constitution and respect the court’s decision.
Benson, who has long been a vocal proponent of constitutional integrity, referenced Article 66 of the 1986 Constitution, which grants the Supreme Court the final say on constitutional matters. This ruling, according to Benson, is not only a victory for the rule of law but also a clarion call for all lawmakers to respect the judicial system.
“I made a vow before God on January 15, 2024, to abide by, uphold, and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia,” Benson wrote. “With the ruling of April 23, 2025, I will sit under the gavel of Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa when the 55th National Legislature reconvenes per the Supreme Court’s mandate.”
Benson urged his fellow lawmakers to honor the court’s opinion, emphasizing that they, too, had sworn an oath to protect the Constitution. He concluded his statement with a call for unity and respect for the rule of law, invoking God’s blessing upon the nation.
The decision has already had significant political ramifications, and it remains to be seen how this development will impact the ongoing power struggle within the legislature. However, for now, Benson’s stance serves as a reaffirmation of his commitment to constitutional order.
