Monrovia, Liberia-The House of Representatives has decisively approved a number of pivotal education reform bills that aim to broaden and enhance Liberia’s higher education framework and promote inclusive learning opportunities.
The approval followed the official presentation by the Joint Committee on Education and Public Administration, along with the Judiciary, chaired by Hon. Nyahn G. Flomo, the representative for Nimba County, district 2.
The Plenary had previously tasked the committee with conducting an in-depth examination and public evaluation of the proposed bills.
Hon. Flomo noted that the committee held extensive public hearings with essential stakeholders in the education sector, who largely endorsed the proposed initiatives.
In light of the findings and feedback from stakeholders, the committee advocated for legislation to establish the Sign Language Institute of Liberia, elevate the Monrovia Vocational Training Center to university status, and upgrade Bong Technical College to university status as well.
Additionally, the bills propose the creation of community colleges in River Gee and Rivercess.
“These legislative measures are vital for overhauling Liberia’s educational landscape, especially in broadening access to technical, vocational, and inclusive education across the nation,” Hon. Flomo conveyed in his statement to the House.
The House’s approval of these bills represents a critical advancement in enhancing institutional capacity, fostering higher education, and improving educational equity, particularly in underserved areas like River Gee and Rivercess Counties.
The bill will be sent to the Liberian Senate for approval before heading to the President for final endorsement.
