House Endorses Mulbah’s Policy-Driven Changes to Decent Work Act

By Archie Boan

The Liberian House of Representatives has passed amendments to the Decent Work Act, backing a reform initiative led by Montserrado County District #3 Representative Sumo K. Mulbah aimed at strengthening worker protections and modernizing the country’s labor laws.

The decision followed the presentation of a report by an Ad-hoc Committee chaired by Sinoe County District #1 Representative Thomas Remeo Quioh. The committee was tasked with reviewing the proposed legislation titled “An Act to Amend the Decent Work Act of the Republic of Liberia.”

According to the committee, its review was extensive, examining the proposed amendments alongside the existing Decent Work Act and assessing their relevance to current labor conditions in Liberia. The evaluation also considered the country’s broader national agenda to promote fair, safe, and equitable employment standards.

The committee analyzed the legal, administrative, and socio-economic implications of the bill and concluded that the proposed changes are both timely and necessary to address evolving workplace realities.

In its recommendation to plenary, the committee urged lawmakers to pass the bill and forward it to the Liberian Senate for concurrence in keeping with Article 35 of the Constitution and established legislative procedures.

Plenary unanimously accepted the committee’s recommendations and approved the bill. The amended legislation now awaits review by the Senate.

If ratified, the revised Decent Work Act is expected to strengthen the regulatory framework governing labor relations, enhance employee protections, and promote industrial harmony while maintaining a balanced and compliant environment for employers.
