The Plenary of the House of Representatives has mandated the Public Accounts & Expenditure Committee (PAC) to collaborate with the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to conduct a comprehensive audit of the House’s operations.
This decision was made on Thursday, February 27, 2025, during the 12th Day Sitting of the 1st Quarter of the 2nd Session, following a communication from Hon. Nyan Flomo, Representative for Nimba County Electoral District #2.
In his communication, Hon. Flomo emphasized the importance of the Legislature’s constitutional duty to ensure transparency and accountability within its ranks. He cited Chapter 2, Article 5(c) of the 1986 Constitution, which calls for the elimination of abuses of power, misuse of government resources, nepotism, and corruption. Hon. Flomo also referenced House Rule 44.1, which mandates lawmakers to set an example in the fight against corruption.
The move comes after a previous attempt to conduct an audit of the House by the GAC was abruptly halted last year without explanation. Hon. Flomo expressed concern that any further delays in resuming the audit would risk damaging the Legislature’s credibility and portray the House as unwilling to tackle corruption. He stressed that the audit was a vital step in ensuring the House leads by example in promoting good governance.
By taking this action, the 55th Legislature has reaffirmed its commitment to financial accountability, institutional integrity, and adherence to national and international best practices. The decision to move forward with the audit is seen as a significant step towards restoring public trust in the legislative process and ensuring transparency in the management of public resources.
