The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward improving educational opportunities in southeastern Liberia, mandating a joint committee to review a bill proposing the establishment of a community college in River Gee County.
The bill, titled “An Act to Establish the River Gee County Community College,” was introduced by River Gee District #1 Representative Alexander Poure during the third day sitting of the 2nd quarter of the 2nd session on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
During the bill’s first reading, Rep. Poure emphasized that the institution would offer degree programs tailored to the county’s development needs. He noted that the college would play a crucial role in reducing youth migration in search of higher education and serve as a catalyst for local job creation and innovation.
River Gee, with a population of approximately 66,789, is among Liberia’s least populous counties. According to Rep. Poure, this makes the need for localized educational infrastructure even more urgent.
The House Plenary has directed its Joint Committee on Education and Public Administration, Ways, Means and Finance, and Judiciary to examine the proposed legislation.
If enacted, River Gee would become the latest county to benefit from a government-backed community college, continuing efforts to expand access to tertiary education throughout Liberia.
