House Reviews Proposed Laws to Establish Labor and Probate Courts in Nimba

The House of Representatives has directed its relevant committees to review two proposed bills seeking to establish a Labor Court and a Probate Court in Nimba County. The Judiciary, Internal Affairs, Ways, Means, and Finance, along with Good Governance committees, have been tasked with analyzing the bills and providing recommendations to the House Plenary within two weeks.

The legislative move follows a formal submission by Representative Samuel G. Kogar of Nimba County’s Electoral District 5 during the 11th Day sitting of the 2nd Session of the 55th Legislature. The proposed laws are intended to address critical judicial shortcomings in the county, particularly in handling labor and probate disputes.

The bill titled “An Act for the Establishment of a Labor Court in Nimba County” seeks to alleviate the growing number of labor-related disputes, particularly within the mining and trade sectors. Representative Kogar highlighted that the increasing volume of labor cases has placed an overwhelming burden on the county’s only Circuit Court, which is already handling both civil and criminal cases. He stressed that establishing a dedicated labor court would ensure a more efficient and specialized approach to resolving these disputes and fostering industrial stability.

“Given the rising number of labor-related cases and the excessive burden on our single Circuit Court, the establishment of a Labor Court will ensure fair and timely adjudication of disputes while promoting a more stable labor environment,” Kogar stated in his communication to the Legislature.

The second proposed bill, titled “An Act to Create a Probate Court in Nimba County,” aims to provide a dedicated judicial forum for resolving land ownership disputes, inheritance issues, and other probate-related matters. Kogar emphasized that longstanding conflicts over property rights and legitimate land titles have underscored the need for a specialized court to handle these complex legal matters.
