Grand Gedeh County – [July 11, 2025] – Police sources in Grand Gedeh County have reported a shocking shooting incident that resulted in the death of two men from the Liberian side of the border with Ivory Coast.

According to a recent report from the Crime Services Department of the Grand Gedeh Police Detachment, the shooting was allegedly perpetrated by security forces believed to be Ivorian Security.

The report indicated that there were two deaths – one a 22-year-old man, identified as Mohammed Kamara of the Mandingo tribe, while the other is a 45-year-old Burkinabe national identified as Abdullahi Zougranda.

The report unveiled that Abdullahi Zougranda was on a fishing expedition on an Island in the Cavalla River when he was shot several times with bullets penetrating his mouth and severing his index finger.

The report also indicated that Mohammed Kamara was mining on the Cavalla River using a Dregg machine, along with two others, but was fired on sight and subsequently tried swimming to the Liberian side but later got drowned after being subdued by the gun fire.

The LNP, upon receiving complaints from a community member, swiftly reported to the scene.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased have requested the remains of the deceased; Abdullahi Zougranda and Mohammed Kamara have been turned over to their family members for burial.

Over the years, there have been reports of confrontations and harassment from Ivorian security on Liberians and other nationals who are mining and fishing in the Cavalla River.

These complaints have always been managed by community leaders living in mining camps along the borders.

This current alleged shooting incident leading to the death of two persons should claim the attention of Liberian government and find appropriate manners of curtailing such situations.
