Jean Marius Yao Seeks Forgiveness from Lawmakers

Monrovia, Liberia – Jean Marius Yao, Chief Executive Officer of Orange Liberia, has issued an apology to the House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee on Telecommunications after failing to attend two scheduled hearings. Yao appeared before the committee on Monday, offering an explanation for his absence and expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.

Explaining the reason behind his nonattendance, Yao told lawmakers that he was dealing with personal matters following the death of his father. He emphasized that his absence was unavoidable due to the need to handle funeral arrangements. In a brief statement, he expressed remorse for missing the prior sessions and acknowledged the importance of cooperating with the committee’s inquiry.

Following Yao’s apology, Maryland County District 3 Representative Austin Taylor proposed a motion to accept the explanation and forgive the CEO. The motion was unanimously supported by the committee, which is chaired by Margibi County District 2 Representative Ivar Jones. The committee subsequently scheduled a new hearing for Friday, February 28, 2025, to allow additional time for a comprehensive review of the documents submitted by Orange Liberia.

The investigation stems from ongoing complaints about poor telecommunications services in southeastern Liberia. Residents in the affected areas have reported that persistent network failures are disrupting daily life and impeding economic activities. Lawmakers initiated the inquiry to address public concerns and seek answers from service providers about the cause of the recurring issues.
