JEP Under Fire as Ganta Citizens Decry Extra Charges, Lack of Street Lights

By: Jeremiah B. Gayflor, II

Ganta City, Nimba County – Tension is rising in Ganta as residents threaten to launch a massive protest against Jungle Energy Power (JEP), the city’s sole electricity provider.

Residents accuse JEP of imposing what they describe as an “unfair and exploitative” charge of US$1.50 on every electricity purchase, a deduction they say is unjust and harmful to struggling consumers.

In addition to concerns over the charges, the residents are demanding that JEP’s management, including its Chief Executive Officer Tomah Sei Floyd, Sr., install street lights across the city. They allege that Floyd has prioritized lighting around his own business establishments while leaving several communities in darkness, increasing their exposure to criminal activities.

Some residents further claim that Floyd’s close relationship with Vice President Jeremiah Kpahn Kung and his reported influence in the appointment of Nimba County Superintendent Kou Miapeh Gono have emboldened him to mistreat customers without fear of accountability.

When contacted via mobile phone, JEP Public Relations Officer Zarwolo Barmakpa confirmed the US$1.50 deduction but insisted that the charge is mandated by the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Authority (LERA). Addressing the concerns about street lights at the CEO’s business locations, Barmakpa said they exist “only by the grace of God,” dismissing claims that the company has intentionally neglected community lighting.

Residents say they will proceed with their planned protest if JEP fails to address their concerns in the coming days.
