Journalist Calls for Greater Support to Strengthen Voice of Grand Kru Community Radio

By Staff Reporter

Liberian journalist and media advocate Patrick Teah Jr. has renewed appeals for immediate support to address the infrastructural, technical, and financial constraints confronting Voice of Grand Kru 98.1 FM, emphasizing the need for a more balanced approach to county development.

Speaking during recent public engagements, Teah observed that while Grand Kru County frequently mobilizes resources for sports and other short-term initiatives, essential institutions such as community radio stations continue to receive limited attention, despite providing continuous public service.

“Community radio is not seasonal,” Teah said. “It operates daily to inform, educate, and promote accountability. Development efforts must be balanced.”

Voice of Grand Kru, the county’s primary community broadcaster, reportedly operates with outdated equipment and minimal funding, even as it remains central to civic education, disaster awareness, youth engagement, and development communication, particularly in hard-to-reach communities.

Teah stressed that sustaining community media should be a priority, noting that effective citizen participation and transparency are difficult to achieve without a strong and independent local media.

Other media stakeholders, including the Grand Kru Journalists Association, have echoed the call, urging the Grand Kru County Caucus, local government authorities, development partners, and residents to invest in modern equipment, infrastructure, and sustainable funding for community radio.

He clarified that the advocacy is not driven by personal interest, but by a shared responsibility to strengthen good governance and inclusive development in Grand Kru County.
