Justice Ministry Confirms 47 Inmates Broke Jail at Kakata Central Prison

As reported by this paper in our Monday news publication, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed this information.

Our news outlet disclosed that over 40 inmates escaped from the Central Prison in Margibi, marking it as the first major jailbreak of 2024.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that forty-seven (47) inmates escaped from the Kakata Central Prison in Kakata, Margibi County, over the weekend. According to initial investigations, the inmates were able to escape due to a breach in the prison’s security system.

In a release issued, the Ministry of Justice stated that it is working closely with the Liberia National Police and the prison authorities to determine the exact cause of the breach and to take appropriate action to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Ministry also expressed deep concern about this incident and assured that it is taking all necessary measures to ensure the recapture of the escaped inmates.

In the release, the Ministry mentioned that the Liberia National Police has deployed additional officers to assist in the search and apprehension of the escaped inmates. “The Ministry of Justice assures the public that all efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of the citizens and to bring the escaped inmates to justice. We urge the public to remain calm and to report any information that may lead to the recapture of the inmates.”

The Ministry of Justice also pointed out that harboring or aiding escaped inmates is a criminal offense and that anyone found guilty will face the full force of the law.

It continued by stating, “We also call on the escaped inmates to surrender themselves to the nearest police station or to the prison authorities to avoid facing additional charges.”

According to the law enforcement body, it will not condone lawlessness and indicated that it will ensure that justice is served. “We urge the public to continue to support the Government’s efforts in maintaining law and order in our society.”
