Verity News and Peace FM senior reporter, Emmanuel M. Kangar, has issued a powerful call to action for journalists across Liberia to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in their work. Speaking at a peace forum held in Kakata City on Tuesday, Kangar encouraged his fellow journalists to remain “different and uncompromising” in the face of challenges confronting the media landscape.
“This field calls for honesty, and we need to live up to the standard,” Kangar said. “Let’s be different and uncompromising. Journalism is not just a job ~ it is a responsibility to the public.”
The tough-talking journalist also appealed to the public to support press freedom and refrain from attacks on the media, which he said hinder the flow of independent and accurate information.
“We can only be powerful and work independently when you, the citizens, support us,” Kangar emphasized. “Don’t be carried away by money to attack journalists. We are always speaking for you.”
Addressing a large gathering of journalists, students, civil society leaders, and community stakeholders at the Lango Lippaye High School Auditorium, Kangar warned against the dangers of fake news and misinformation, particularly on social media.
“There are fake news out there ~ be aware,” he cautioned. “You need to verify whatsoever you read before believing or reposting it. Misinformation and disinformation are less common on the radio because you have professionals operating there, but social media is different. Know who is posting before you consume or share it.”
The one-day forum, held under the theme “Peace Forum on Human Rights and Democratic Accountability,” was organized by youth advocacy group Messengers of Peace in partnership with Internews Liberia. The event was funded by the European Union.
