Koffa Wants International Investigation into Capitol Building Fire

Embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has called for the involvement of international partners to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into the recent fire at the Capitol Building.

The incident, which has disrupted legislative activities and raised concerns about preserving Liberia’s cultural heritage, has sparked debate about transparency in the ongoing probe.

In a statement on social media, Speaker Koffa reaffirmed his commitment to cooperating with the investigation while maintaining his innocence.

“Since the unfortunate occurrence of this event, I have consistently cooperated and ensured the cooperation of all persons under my employ. I must reiterate that I am and remain innocent of any involvement in this event. I again encourage the authorities to seek international partners’ assistance to ensure a fair and impartial investigation,” he wrote.

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has identified Koffa and several other legislators as persons of interest in connection with what it suspects to be an arson attack.

The list includes Representatives Saah Foko, Abu B. Kamara, Dixon W. Sebo, Priscilla A. Cooper, J. Marvin Cole, and Jacob C. Debee.

On January 23, the LNP formally communicated with the House of Representatives, acknowledging the gravity of the incident and committing to a professional investigation. Deputy Chief Clerk Comicks Chea read the letter during the House’s plenary session, where the police requested a meeting with the identified lawmakers.

The LNP emphasized that it would respect the rights of all individuals involved and assured its full cooperation with the legislative body.

In response, Maryland County District #2 Representative Anthony Williams moved to forward the LNP’s communication to the House leadership for review and further action.

The House leadership, in turn, pledged its commitment to the rule of law and affirmed its willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
The incident has elicited mixed reactions among lawmakers.

Montserrado County District 9 Representative Frank Saah Foko publicly addressed rumors linking him to the fire, denying any communication from the police or National Security Agency regarding his alleged arrest.

“For the record, I have not received any call(s) from LNP or NSA as it has been speculated about my arrest. I am home sitting outside just in case the information is true that some security is coming to arrest me. My gates are open,” Foko stated on social media, adding to the public intrigue surrounding the case.
