Capitol Hill – In a controversial move on Thursday, November 21, 2024, Representative J. Fonati Koffa was ousted as Speaker of Liberia’s 55th National Legislature. He emphasized that Liberia’s Constitution mandates a resolution supported by two-thirds of House members before such a motion can proceed.
“Merely signing a resolution is insufficient to remove a Speaker,” McGill stated. “The proper procedure requires that the Speaker be afforded due process, including the opportunity to defend himself. Following this, a roll-call vote must secure 49 votes for the Speaker’s removal. This process ensures fairness and accountability, principles upheld in democracies worldwide.”
McGill further warned that bypassing these constitutional safeguards sets a dangerous precedent, likening the situation to a potential descent into anarchy. He called the Supreme Court to intervene decisively, stating, “It is now for the judiciary to interpret the law. Any failure to act will reduce Liberia to a banana republic.”
Koffa’s removal stems from accusations of corruption and conflict of interest, allegations he has vehemently denied. In a defiant stance, the ousted Speaker vowed not to resign, stating, “Even if I am left with one lawmaker, I will not step down.”
Koffa has since filed a petition with the Supreme Court, challenging the legality of his removal and seeking to restore what he describes as constitutional order.
