Kpelle Association Rejects Proposal to Abolish Sande Bush Practice

By Archie Boan

The National Association of Kpelle and Kpelle-Speaking People of Liberia (NAKKSPL) has firmly rejected a proposal to abolish the traditional Sande Bush practice, calling the move “misguided” and “rooted in a lack of understanding and cultural sensitivity.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the association described the Sande bush as “a sacred institution that has been passed down through generations, playing a pivotal role in the socialization, empowerment, and cultural education of young girls.”

“We will not compromise our cultural identity for the sake of appeasement,” said J. Lepolu Torlon, National Chairman of NAKKSPL. “Our traditions are a symbol of our community’s strength, resilience, and rich cultural heritage.”

While acknowledging concerns from external observers, the group emphasized its commitment to ensuring “the safety and well-being of our children while preserving our cultural traditions.”

NAKKSPL pledged to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to promote cross-cultural understanding but insisted that the Sande bush remains “an integral part of our cultural heritage.”

“We will not let our cultural heritage be erased or dictated by external forces,” the statement concluded. “We will continue to stand strong and united in defense of our traditions and values.”
