Cestos City, Rivercess County – A devastating fire gutted a home in the Kru Town Community late Monday night (October 20, 2025), leaving a local businesswoman and her family homeless and deprived.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 PM, completely destroying the two-bedroom residence of Madam Comfort Hennings, a small business owner who had recently invested in her shop through a loan.
Speaking to Verity News in the aftermath of the disaster, Madam Hennings recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the blaze. “I was sleeping when I heard a strange sound on the roof.
I thought it was rain, but there was no rain. I went back to sleep. Later, I heard another sound and ran outside, only to see smoke filling the house. By then, it was too late,” she said.
Despite efforts by community members to assist, the fire quickly engulfed the entire structure, leaving nothing behind.
According to Madam Hennings, she had just stocked her mini shop with goods worth L$200,000 and had L$50,000 in cash on hand—both of which were completely lost in the fire, along with all household belongings. She said the loan used to purchase the materials had been taken only two days prior.
“I don’t even know where to start from now,” she said tearfully. “Everything I worked for, everything I borrowed to grow my business is gone. My child and I have no home and not even slippers for my son to wear.”
Madam Hennings ruled out common causes of house fires, stating she had no mosquito coil, was not using gas, and had no open fire or cookpot burning at the time of the incident. She described the fire as suspicious but said she had no leads on what could have started it. No injuries or deaths were reported during the incident.
Now displaced and struggling to get by, Madam Hennings is appealing to humanitarian organizations, philanthropists, and the general public for assistance.
“I need help. If anyone can help my family and me with anything, food, clothes, shelter (zinc) we will truly appreciate it,” she pleaded.
