LAA Commissions New Fire Engine, Tractors to Boost Airport Safety

By Emmanuel M Kangar Jr.

The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has taken a significant step toward modernizing the country’s aviation sector with the commissioning of a new fire engine and two heavy-duty tractors at Roberts International Airport on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

The newly acquired equipment is expected to substantially enhance emergency response capabilities and strengthen airfield maintenance, as the LAA intensifies efforts to achieve Category 9 status—an internationally recognized benchmark for airport safety and firefighting readiness.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Acting Managing Director of the LAA, John Z. Buway, described the additions as a critical milestone in improving operational safety and aligning the airport with global aviation standards. He emphasized that the fire engine will significantly boost the airport’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, thereby ensuring passenger and staff safety.

Buway also highlighted the importance of the two heavy-duty tractors, noting that they will play a vital role in maintaining the airfield environment.

According to him, consistent vegetation control is essential for clear visibility, prevention of wildlife hazards, and the overall safety of flight operations.

“These investments are not just about equipment; they represent our commitment to safety, compliance, and service excellence,” Buway stated.

The initiative, realized under the leadership of the LAA Management Team and Board of Directors, reflects ongoing efforts to upgrade Liberia’s aviation infrastructure and meet international requirements.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the LAA Board of Directors, Nyan Matein, expressed appreciation to the Government of Liberia, led by Joseph Nyumah Boakai, as well as international partners, for their continued support.

Matein noted that the achievement underscores a strong national commitment to building a safer and more reliable aviation system. He added that such progress will enhance public confidence in air travel and position Liberia as a more competitive destination within the region’s aviation landscape.

The commissioning marks another milestone in the LAA’s broader modernization agenda, aimed at ensuring that Liberia’s primary gateway meets evolving global standards for safety, security, and efficiency.
