LAA Gets New Leadership, Hughes Commits Safety and Security as Top Priorities

Ernest G. Hughes officially began his duties Monday, November 17, 2025, as Managing Director of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), following his recent nomination by President Joseph N. Boakai and confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

Hughes takes over the position from Hon. Jero H. Mends-Cole, who retired earlier this year. His introduction to staff members took place during a well-attended meeting at the Roberts International Airport Administrative Building, where he outlined his priorities and vision for the authority.

In his remarks, Hughes stressed that under his leadership, the LAA will place strong emphasis on safety, security, and customer service~three pillars he considers “non-negotiable” for the effective operation of the Roberts International Airport (RIA). He warned that any violations of established safety and security protocols would be met with strict administrative action.

“First and foremost, the safety of all who pass through our airport, whether passengers or crew members, is non-negotiable,” Hughes said, noting that improving standards and ensuring operational excellence will require the collective effort of all employees.

Acknowledging the challenges facing the airport sector, Hughes encouraged staff to work as a team to elevate RIA’s reputation regionally and internationally.

The new Managing Director was introduced alongside Hon. John Z. Buway, the new Deputy Managing Director for Administration, and Hon. Nyan Martein, the newly appointed Chairman of the LAA Board of Directors.

Chairman Martein expressed confidence in Hughes’ leadership, urging employees to unite behind the new administration’s goals. He reaffirmed the board’s support and emphasized the importance of cooperation in advancing the airport’s development agenda.
