The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has launched an investigation into serious allegations of extortion and intimidation by security personnel stationed at Roberts International Airport (RIA). Reports surfaced claiming that passengers were subjected to what has been described as “robbery and intimidation,” with travelers allegedly forced to pay unauthorized fees to have their luggage cleared.
According to a press release from the LAA, these allegations, reported by Verity News, have prompted the airport management to take swift action. The LAA pledged a full-scale investigation in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to examine the circumstances surrounding the claims thoroughly.
“We are committed to ensuring that all reports of misconduct are taken seriously and addressed with the utmost urgency,” the LAA statement emphasized. The authority has called on individuals with information or firsthand accounts of misconduct to come forward, assuring them that confidentiality will be maintained.
The allegations have sparked outrage among passengers, including returning Liberians, who have detailed their encounters with airport security to the press. Speaking anonymously to Verity News, one traveller recounted being pressured into paying a significant sum to recover her bags. “It felt like a robbery,” she lamented, expressing frustration over the lack of accountability among airport personnel.
A video obtained by Verity News further substantiates the claims, showing security officers allegedly scrutinizing passengers’ luggage before demanding payments. The footage has intensified calls for accountability, with many arguing that such practices tarnish Liberia’s international image and undermine public trust in the country’s security systems.
The alleged extortion at RIA highlights systemic concerns about governance and accountability in public institutions. Family members of affected passengers have criticized such actions, arguing that they contradict Liberia’s efforts to attract foreign investment and build a transparent, corruption-free society.
The timing of these allegations is particularly troubling for the LAA, which has been working to enhance Liberia’s aviation sector. On November 30, 2024, Ethiopian Airlines resumed flight operations in Liberia, marking a significant milestone for the country’s aviation industry. The arrival of its inaugural flight was a substantial boost for RIA and showcased the airport’s potential to become a regional and international travel hub.
However, the allegations of misconduct threaten to overshadow such progress. Observers note that incidents could deter potential visitors and investors, ultimately harming Liberia’s reputation and economic prospects.
The Liberia Airport Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity. “The integrity and safety of our airports, as well as the well-being of passengers and staff, remain our highest priority,” the LAA statement said.
Meanwhile, families, including affected travelers, are eagerly awaiting updates on the progress of the investigation. Many call for decisive action to address the alleged misconduct and ensure such incidents do not recur. Speaking anonymously to Verity, one affected traveler emphasized that Liberia must strengthen its aviation sector and international reputation. He noted that resolving these allegations swiftly and transparently will be crucial in restoring public trust.
According to him, the incident highlights the urgent need for reforms within Liberia’s public institutions to eliminate corruption and foster accountability. He warned that failure to address these issues could discourage Liberians living abroad, particularly in the United States, from returning to their homeland for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
