LDEA Seizes Over $112,000 Worth of Tramadol at Bo Waterside Port of Entry

Monrovia, Liberia ~ In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has intercepted and seized a large consignment of illicit pharmaceutical drugs valued at over USD 112,000 at the Bo Waterside Port of Entry in Grand Cape Mount County.

The operation, carried out on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at approximately 1:30 p.m., followed credible intelligence gathered by the LDEA’s Bo Waterside Detachment. During a routine inspection, officers discovered 1,067 packs of Tapentadol—commonly known as Tramadol—concealed in two white slippers bags.

The drugs were found in the possession of Mr. Mohammed M. Sheriff, a 38-year-old Liberian national, who was traveling from Freetown, Sierra Leone, en route to Monrovia. The total estimated street value of the seized narcotics is USD 112,315.78, equivalent to roughly LRD 21.3 million.

According to the LDEA, this seizure marks a significant disruption of transnational drug trafficking networks operating along Liberia’s borders.

In an official statement, the agency credited the success of the operation to ongoing border management training and technical support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Liberia. These international partnerships have played a vital role in enhancing the agency’s capacity to detect and intercept illicit substances.

“The LDEA remains committed to protecting Liberia’s borders and shielding communities from the dangers posed by illegal drugs,” the agency stated.

Investigations into the case are ongoing, and Mr. Sheriff is expected to face prosecution under Liberia’s narcotics laws.
